Cancer Awareness

Reduce the Risk

Raising awareness of the avoidable risks of cancer and the importance of screening and early detection.

Research suggests that around half of all cancers could be prevented by changes to lifestyle. Cancer Research UK’s Reduce the Risk campaign highlights five ways you can lower your cancer risk.

5 Key Messages
Eat and drink healthilyEat and drink healthily
Limit alcohol and maintain a healthy diet to reduce your risk.
Alcohol is a proven cause of many types of cancer including mouth and breast cancer.

Smoking and drinking together increases your risk even more. Limiting the amount you drink to recommended levels can help you to reduce your risk of cancer. What you eat can also affect your risk of cancer, and getting a healthy, balanced diet can help you to reduce your risk. Aim for a diet high in fibre, fruit and vegetables and low in fat, red meat and processed meat.
Stay in shapeStay in shape
Cut your cancer risk by keeping a healthy weight. Keeping a healthy bodyweight and getting enough physical activity are proven ways of reducing your risk of breast, bowel and other cancers.

Try to balance the energy you take in from food with the energy you burn through activity. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, swimming or housework, five days a week can help to keep you healthy.
Stop smokingStop smoking
This is the best present you will ever give yourself. Smoking is the single biggest cause of cancer in the world and half of all smokers eventually die because of their habit.

The good news is that quitting can greatly reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases. We know it's hard but support and effective treatments are available to help you quit.
