We
are members of the Forest Hillbillies team for Relay
for Life (previously known as Yorkley Health Centre)
and last year tried to find 'different' ways of
fundraising. Les bought four bikes on Ebay for £3.99,
scrapped one of them and did up and did repairs on the
others which we sold at a reasonable profit. One of the
first buyers was so pleased with what we were doing that
she gave us a couple of bikes to sell. It has snowballed
from there. We often arrive home after work to find
another couple of bikes have been left for us just
inside the gate.
We've given ourselves the nickname of 'Forest Cycle
Recycle' and pride ourselves on the fact that we can
sell our bikes at very reasonable prices (usually
between £5 and £40). Some of the bikes
donated are in surprisingly new condition while others
have been very well used, but we don't sell any of them
unless we consider them to be safe and roadworthy. Any
bikes that we can't repair are stripped of any working
bits - wheels, pedals, cranks, etc. We recently had a
trailer full of broken bike parts that couldn't be used
for anything at all so we took them to the scrap yard in
Lydney which raised another £12.80.
It's very much a 'Win-Win' situation for both the donors
and buyers and is the ultimate recycling project. The
people donating their bikes win the opportunity to be at
the cutting edge of the fight against cancer by their
generosity. Old bikes are being repaired and put back on
the road (or cycle path). The people buying are being
generous - and win a low cost chance of get fitting and
healthy and the knowledge that all the money is being
used for research into a disease which has touched all
us in some way. Cancer Research UK is benefiting from
all of the money raised which goes on to help 'recycle'
lives. Just think - donating your old bike or buying one
from us will is your chance to help someone win the
fight against cancer!
Our customers range from children as young as seven up
to retired people, some are locals, some are just people
driving past on day trips who stop when they see our
signs. It's especially nice to see young lads riding
around on bikes that they've bought from us with their
pocket money. Not only are they out and about, keeping
themselves fit and having fun, but they have donated
generously to Cancer Research.
We are always grateful for donations - any size and in
any condition, so please spread the word. Many people
are pleased to get rid of the bike that's been getting
in the way in their shed for years. They know deep down
that they never will ride it again and are pleased to
see it go to such a good cause.
Why not buy a bike from us? In fact you could easily buy
a bike each for your whole family for well under the
cost of just one new bike from a bike shop. The Forest
has plenty of good, safe, cycle tracks and it's a
wonderful way to get fit. If you rode a bike a couple of
times a week just think how much easier that 24 hour
walk would be.
We live at Fieldway, Lydney Road, Yorkley, between The
Bailey and Yorkley Primary School, but on the opposite
side of the road. You'll see the house if you drive by -
it's the one with all the bikes outside!
If you have a bike to donate but can't get it to us,
please call Les or Julie on 01594
563664 (or ask for Julie at Yorkley Health Centre)
and we'll arrange collection.
Finally, our only problem is storage. If anyone has
space for storage in a garage, shed or corner of a barn
we would be very grateful. You wouldn't be pestered by
buyers, just us occasionally bringing or taking away a
few bikes at a time.
