Teaming up to beat Cancer

Count down to Relay For Life 2012:
History
Relay For Life is the largest non-profit fundraising event in the world, and now takes place in more than 20 countries! It all started in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington USA, when a Surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a keen runner, decided he wanted to make a difference and walked around a track for 24hours.  He raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. The following year he recruited a committee and 19 teams to join him on this unique overnight experience, and Relay For Life was born!
The Forest of Dean are enormously proud to have been involved with Relay For Life since it's introduction into the UK as a volunteer-led event in 2005. In that year, there were only 15 such events in the UK, and 13 teams from this community raised a wonderful £13,000. In 2006, the event became even bigger - 24 teams walked the track in glorious sunshine and raised over £26,000. In 2007 the weather was unkind, but true 'Dunkirk spirit' reigned, and, despite the elements, 24 teams raised a fantastic £38,000 In 2008 the sun came out and 26 teams raised £52,000. In 2009 the weather was again kind to us and 26 teams raised £72,000. In 2010 Stacey Solomon from the X Factor joined us and teams raised £83,734.35. Last year the teams raised a massive £57,396.61

To date Relay For Life Forest of Dean has raised: £341,130.96 !!! - a remarkable sum of money for such a small community!
Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiserRelay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It allows communities to come together, to honour Cancer Survivors, remember those whose lives have been lost, educate the community on cancer prevention and early detection, and raise life-saving funds to help Cancer Research UK find new answers to the many different forms of cancer.
Why 24hours?
We are asking you to give up a day of your life for those who may not have another - the 24 hours is symbolic and gives Relay For Life it's unique appeal.

At Relay For Life we come together for one day....one night....one reason

       Together we will beat cancer!
